The story of the Jackalope is old and the stuff of scary campfire stories. The Jackalope was first encountered in the US in Douglas, Wyoming back in 1939. But descriptions of horned hares date back to medieval and Renaissance times. Scientific books from the 1700’s have pictures of real Frankenstein rabbits. And there is even one in the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. The antlered rabbits are freaky fast, running at speeds of up to 90 mph. And vicious! Sometimes called the warrior rabbit because they will attack with their antlers.
Is a Jackalope real, or just a hoax? Does it even matter? Probably not. Just make sure you have this cotton twill five-panel hat pulled low and one eye open when you’re camping in the West.
